Bromeliad Mix

Description

Bromeliads are fascinating plants that take in nutrients and water through their leaves and/or central tank rather than their root system. They have three growing habits – epiphytic, terrestrial and saxicolous – and require good air circulation and the ability to dry between waterings as a result. The potting medium needs to be rich, well-draining, and capable of holding on to moisture without waterlogging the roots.

Light levels will depend upon the type of bromeliad you have. A general rule of thumb is soft, flexible and spineless leaves will enjoy lower light levels, and stiff, hard leaves will prefer more bright, indirect light. Bromeliads will thrive in temperatures between 60°F and 80°F, but are able to survive outside of this range as well. Ensure that your bromeliad’s central tank stays full of water, but be sure to flush this regularly as stagnant water here can lead to rot.
