Description

Oncidium orchids are also called Dancing Lady Orchids because the shape of their flowers resemble sashaying dresses. Dancing Ladies thrive with partial sun, a well-draining soil, and typically flower in the fall. Oncidiums are epiphytic, meaning they naturally grow in the crooks and crannies in the canopies of trees. As a result, a soil-based potting mix could leave you vulnerable to root rot and doesn’t give your Dancing Lady the best chance at success. If you choose to put your Oncidium in a pot, your substrate needs to address these needs.

The Dancing Lady Orchids like their environment to be kept warm, 55° – 60°F at night, and 80°-85°F during the day and stay happy at indoor room temperature. Light needs can vary from one species to the next, however a good rule of thumb is that generally the thicker-leaved plants can stand more light. More light will yield more blooms.

Keep your potting medium lightly moist, but not soggy. Be sure also to let the pot dry out at least halfway through before watering again. Oncidiums require less humidity than other orchids and can be anywhere from 30% – 60%.

I feed my orchids and other tropicals with MSU’s Greencare Orchid Fertilizer 13-3-15 once a week during the growing season and flush with distilled water once a month,(every three waterings).
