Description
Kyanite is a blue silicate member of the aluminosilicate series commonly found in aluminium rich metamorphic pegmatites.
Kyanite’s parent rocks, sedimentary or igneous rocks, undergo tectonic processes that subject them to extreme increases in temperature and pressure. Under these conditions, the minerals in the parent rocks experience metamorphic changes that rearrange their atomic structure into the bladed crystals of Kyanite. The crystals grow as the minerals recrystallize and cool, and they often align themselves along preferred orientations as a result of the foliation or orientation of minerals in the metamorphic rocks. Kyanite’s hardness is greatly varied depending on this crystallographic direction, a property known as anisotropic and is an identifying characteristic of the crystal.
This stone occurs in gneiss, schist, pegmatite, and quartz veins that result from high pressure regional metamorphism of principally pelitic rocks. It occurs as detrital grains in sedimentary rocks and occurs associated with staurolite, andalusite, sillimanite, talc, hornblende, gedrite, mullite, and corundum.
