Description
Chalcedony is a type of microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline quartz, meaning its crystals are so small that they are indistinguishable without a microscope. Chalcedony has a waxy or glassy luster, and comes in a wide range of colors. It can be found all over the world in volcanic rocks, geodes, and in sedimentary rocks.
Chalcedony forms through the precipitation of silica in water-rich minerals, such as quartz, in water. As the water becomes saturated with dissolved silica, it deposits the silica in cavities and fractures in rocks called vesicles, or in spaces such as geodes. Once deposited, the silica forms micro- or cryptocrystalline structures that make up chalcedony through a process of nucleation and crystal growth. The specific conditions of the environment in which chalcedony forms can affect its color, texture, and other properties.
Chalcedony is very common and can be found all over the world. It can occur in a variety of environments including in sedimentary rocks, igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, geodes, and in mineral veins and cavities.
