Description
Aquamarine is a pastel blue to greenish-blue variety of the mineral beryl that, as the name might suggest, has long cultural associations with the sea. Historically, it was long believed to calm waves and keep sailors safe on their voyages and viewed in Christian symbolism as a bringer of moderation and control of passions to its owner. Some maritime legends even hold that this stone was a gift from mermaids, or from the sea god Neptune himself. The array of oceanic blues found in Aquamarine are attributed to the iron impurities in its crystal structure, which form in large, hexagonal prisms and display the Cat’s eye phenomena. Found in the mines of Brazil, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Madagascar.
