Description
Monstera are climbing vines that use aerial roots to attach to trees as they ascend toward the canopies of the rain forests in Central and South America. In order to mimic this climbing habit, place a moss pole directly in the pot close to the plant’s base during repotting. Gently, but firmly, secure the stem to the pole with ties or string so that it is taught but not tight. Keep the moss pole relatively moist to encourage the monstera’s aerial roots to attach themselves to and penetrate through pole for support. Make a new tie for the stem for every new leaf.
These plants do best in bright indirect light and can even enjoy a few hours of direct morning light, however direct afternoon sun can scorch the leaves if the plant is not first acclimated. Lower light levels will impede growth and prevent fenstrations from developing. Although Monstera can tolerate typical household environments, providing additional humidity leads to stronger growth and more fenstrations. Monstera thrive at humidity levels between 40-60% and prefer temperatures at the higher end of the 65°F-85°F range.
